An essay, from the chair
On the slow craft of threading.
How a small studio at 547 Valley Road built five hundred and forty-four five-star reviews on Google, three hundred and fifty more on Booksy, and a single, consistent rating on both — one cotton thread at a time.

The studio sits on the second level of an old brick building on Valley Road in upper Montclair, between Bellevue and Lorraine, a few minutes' walk from the train and a slightly longer one from the place that everyone in town swears makes the best espresso. There is a chair, a window, a small front desk, a bottle of cotton thread that gets through more spool than you'd think.
We are not a chain. We are not a franchise. There is no upsell at checkout. Eight things on the brow menu, a wax list with twenty-some line items, five facials, and a small men's section. That is everything. We do those things, slowly, in an hour that is yours, and we have done them long enough that the math has worked itself out — five hundred and forty-four five-star reviews on Google, three hundred and fifty more on Booksy, the same rating on both because the standard does not change between rooms or seasons.
What follows is not a brochure. It is a short note, by the chair, about how the work gets done.
§ I.
On threading, briefly.
Threading is the original method of removing facial hair, which is a way of saying it predates not just lasers and waxes but the salon itself. Practiced first across South Asia and the Middle East, the technique is exactly as it sounds: a length of cotton thread, doubled and twisted, pulls hair out at the root in a controlled line that wax and tweezers cannot match.
Done well, it is the most precise hair-removal method available. Done badly, it hurts and looks uneven. The difference is the hand of the practitioner, the angle of the thread, the speed of the line — and most of all, the pace. We do not race. A brow that took ten minutes will look better in three days than a brow that took four.
We thread upper lip, chin, sideburns, neck, forehead, and the full face. We thread brows for adults, teens, and the occasional eight-year-old who is here only because her mother is. There is no glue, no chemical, no heat. The skin is calm by the time you stand up.
For clients with skin that does not love wax — which is more clients than the wax industry will admit — threading is often the right answer. The same is true for clients on retinoids, accutane, or any prescription that makes the skin thinner. We will tell you which method is better for your face before we touch it.

Your first visit, in advance.
The first appointment is the longest one — not because we're slow, but because we ask. Skin sensitivities, prescription medications, what you've been doing for hair removal until now, what you wish your brows looked like and what you'd rather they didn't. None of these are required answers, but the more you tell us, the better the work.
Come with the makeup you usually wear, or none. We can work with either. If you've waxed in the last seventy-two hours we may suggest a different service or a different day. If you're on retinoids, accutane, or a recent chemical peel, please mention it before we begin; the skin reacts differently and we want to plan accordingly.
The full hour is yours. We do not double-book; the chair is yours from the time you sit down until the time you stand up. Reservations are made on Booksy or by phone at (201) 682-0888. Walk-ins are welcome as the chair is open; the calendar on Booksy is the truth about what's available right now.
Eight hundred and ninety-four people have written about us, between Google and Booksy. Below: a few phrases the consensus keeps returning to. None are attributed to a specific reviewer, because we don't choose favorites.

Visiting.
The studio is at 547 Valley Road, Suite 1, in upper Montclair, New Jersey, between Bellevue Avenue and Lorraine Avenue, in the brick row that runs north of Watchung Plaza. There is street parking, and a municipal lot one block south. Look for the gold awning.
Hours are Monday through Friday from eleven to six, and Saturday from ten to five-thirty; closed Sundays. The phone is (201) 682-0888 and rings at the front desk during studio hours; if no one picks up, leave a number and we'll call back the same day.
Online booking lives on Booksy; the calendar there is the same one we look at, so it is the truth about what's available right now. Photographs of recent work, when we remember to post them, live on Instagram.
